Biafra: "You Have No Such Powers To Approve Rallies" - Prince Deji Blasts Nigerian Security Heads

23rd April 2017

After the show of shame exhibited by the Nigerian Police on April 21, 2017, when they arrested and later released Prince Adeyanju Deji, Convener of 'Concerned Nigerians' group, the Commissioner of Police for FCT invited him (Mr Adeyanju) for a meeting on Saturday April 22, 2017.

As narrated by Mr Adeyanju in his tweet messages, he decided to go with a witness: Theo Kwame Koffi. Reaching the venue of the meeting, he found the Brigade Commander of Brigade Guards there, the Director of States Security Services (SSS) FCT and other two officers. They were seven (7) altogether in the meeting.

After introductions, the Commissioner who anchored the meeting began with a threat saying, "Mr Adeyanju, we called you to warn you, for dabbling into things that do not concern you."

At this, Mr Adeyanju bursted courageously, interrupted the Commissioner's speech and asked: Did you actually call me to your office sir and made me leave everything I was doing to threaten me?" The Commissioner replied, "No, but it is concerning your letters about protests for Nnamdi Kanu of Biafra and Zakzakky. We do not approve such rallies."

Again,  Mr Adeyanju fearlessly explained to the Commissioner: "Sir, it seems you did not read the letters very well. You have no such powers to give approval for rallies. We never wrote to you to give approval for our rallies because you have no such powers. We wrote to you for police protection. Simple! If you decide to come and protect us which is the job you swore to, protest will go on; if you do not come, protest will still go on sir."

When the Director of SSS began to speak, he started by asking, "Deji, you were part of the last government, you were not protesting. Why are you protesting now?" Mr Adeyanju made it clear to them that he organized #SayNoToXenophobia attacks under the former President, Goodluck Jonathan.

Emphasizing on Nnamdi Kanu's case, the Director of SSS revealed to Mr Adeyanju that the main reason of his arrest on April 21, 2017 was because he took on Nnamdi Kanu's case; expressing that the Nigerian security operatives had never interrupted his rallies before now.

On this, Mr Adeyanju audaciously told the group that the present Nigerian government has been unfair and unjust to Nnamdi Kanu; maintaining that "Concerned Nigerians" group condemns secret trial against Nnamdi Kanu and will continue to oppose it.

At the close of the meeting, the Commissioner advised Mr Adeyanju to protest for every other issue excluding the fight for Nnamdi Kanu. Mr Adeyanju got infuriated at this point and said, "All rallies will take place except if they (government sponsored hoodlums) attack us at the venue.

In response to this event, Amnesty Nigeria tweeted:

  1. "Those in power need to imbibe this sum of Voltaire: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death, your right to say it."
  2. "Those who sing your praises have limitless freedom to do, but those who disagree with you earn intimidation. What does that look like?"

Recall that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB, has been granted bail on October 19, 2015, at the Magistrate Court Abuja and was later again granted unconditional release on December 17, 2015 at the Federal High Court Abuja by Justice Adeniyi Ademola.

In spite of these court orders, the Nigerian government has refused to release Nnamdi Kanu while seeking for every means to deny him open court hearing, trial and justice.
