As a young man, I read about the Nigeria/ Biafra war. I never experienced it. I was opportuned to be taught history in secondary school, unlike many of my fellow youths who still wallow in ignorance about the atrocities that marred our past.
In 1966/67, the international communities watched as Biafrans were killed. Our women raped, hospitals bombed, and schools bombed with many students inside. We still, till today mourn the genocidal killing of Asaba people after the war by Nigerian soldiers. The world kept a blind eye as military government of Abacha murdered Ken Saro Wiwa and his eight(8) Ogoni brothers. The world valued the oil below our land than our lives.
Today, many years after the Biafra civil war, Nigeria failed to uphold unity. They activated marginalization of the two regions that were Biafra before 1967 i.e. present day South-east and South-south geopolitical regions. They have destroyed our lands with oil spillage and denied us proceeds from that same oil. When we complain or agitate they send military to our land to terrorize, kill, main and rape our women.
Just some months back, the Arewa youths served a quit notice to Igbo Biafrans living in Northern part of Nigeria, calling it their own land hence, decides who lives in and who leaves their land. They ask Igbos to vacate or be killed. They threatened to take all the property of Biafrans when they vacates. We should not forget that Igbo here means the Efik, Ijaw, Uhrobo, Isoko, Ogoni, Itshekiri and other clans that make up Biafra territories.
However, we expected the Nigerian government to arrest these youths, but they did not rather sort ways to appease them. They rather sent military in what they called "Operation Python Dance II" to South- East Nigeria also part of Biafraland. A region that is known as the most peaceful in Nigeria.
On Monday 11th September, 2017, the Nigerian military drove armoured vehicles to Afara ukwu, Umuahia, the country home of the leader of Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, trying to forcefully gain entry into his compound. This is a man Nigerian court offered bail under the laws of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria. They left bullet holes in his house. Is this not an assassination attempt?
Till today the military men are still laying siege in Afara Ukwu, Umuahia. They have killed a lot of defenceless and hapless citizens already and the life of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and and millions of Biafrans are in danger.
So I ask you the world, are you all going to watch as history repeats itself again? Are you waiting for the Nigerian government to force the indigenous people into bearing arms in self-defense? I thought the right of indigenous people to self determination is uphold by the United Nations charter? I still hope human rights is what we all preach? Hope we all are still humans? Is referendum not good for blacks?
I therefore, call on international communities to come to our rescue. No one is safe, not even me the writer. They are killing us, they are molesting and intimidating us. The military even went to National Union Of Journalist's (NUJ) office, beat up journalists and destroyed many valuables. Then think of what happens to activists agitating for self determination of Biafra nation.
