Written by Igbo Focus 10th April 2025 Prior to the election of 2023, I used to think, at that time that Igbo and Yoruba societies are the only individuals who are not worried or bothered about who rule them as long as they are in good hand. That a good leader is all they need to steer the country forward. The flawless leader who will seamlessly spearhead the country the way it would be preceded. At the moment, it looks as the Igbos are the only group of people who are more interested in the unity of this country as Yoruba only interested on what a person from their tribe will bring to them. To the Yorubas, whether the other tribes survive or not is none of their concern. Whilst Hausas and Fulanis are not interested whether the candidate is capable but are more interested in northerner or Muslim candidate. At that time, I was thinking that Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos who spoke before then was angry when he said “if Igbos in Lagos didn’t vote for his candidate, they will be pushed into the ocean.” In point of fact, I thought the Oba Akiolu was joking and he was only referring to Lagos. But not realising that majority of Yorubas felt the same way as the Oba Akiolu especially during and after the 2023 general election in Lagos and other Yoruba states. From what went on during the election, we noted that initially in the past, Yoruba people were the one who brought the politics of tribalism and prejudice to the country. The general election of 2023 really brought out the authenticity of the tribal marks of the mainstream Yorubas. Currently, it is more troubling to see how Yoruba discriminates against people of diverse ethnic backgrounds. At the moment, it is developing into cultural occurrence in Yoruba land. For a start, what is the different between Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Peter Obi, they are both Nigerian. We recognise that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is a Yoruba man married to a Delta woman while Peter Obi is an Igbo man married to a Yoruba woman. Yoruba people are so discriminative, they may not know it, but they are from other tribes’ point of view. They may think they’re more welcoming than any other tribe in Nigeria but they merely not and those saying this haven’t gone anywhere else in Nigeria beyond Lagos. They may not even know that prejudice is in their blood, it is really happening, on the contrary worrying to other Nigerians. They may say don’t vote for Obi; he is an Igbo man through their actions, either vocally or surprise attack that will portray him for being an Igbo without any hesitation. Whilst openly influencing the support to vote for Bola Tinubu because he is a Yoruba man. What’s more, if Bola Tinubu was married to an Igbo woman, Yoruba will definitely and acquiescently say “don’t vote for Tinubu because he is married to an Igbo.” On the other hand, Igbos will never say such a thing like “don’t vote for him, he is a Yoruba man or he is married to a Yoruba woman.” Igbo people don’t care about the person one is married to or the region one came from as long as he or she can lead efficiently. It is only recently that north and others started saying “it is our turn to rule that prompted Igbos to start seeking for their turn to rule. To lead the country efficiently, it doesn’t mean that the leader has to come from your region. During the election time of Obasanjo, Yar’adua and Jonathan, in spite of their tribe, as these people are not Igbo, the people from Igbo regions were solidly behind them by voting unanimously for them, all the more so that when fellow Igbos participated in other parties, no one called us "tribalistic". Immediately Igbos resolute to vote for the person they feel has been verified to be on the mend than others, Yoruba begin to call Igbos tribalistic and mawkish. What the Yorubas must remember is that Igbos don’t care and to be honest, their ultimate goal in this life is to flourish, look after their families and mind their own business. Whereas what majority of Yoruba people be concerned about are considerably on the subject of monotonous things and even victimise their own tribe for getting married out of their race. Thus, according to Yorubas, it is a sin to marry outside your race, hence Igbos should punish Peter Obi for marrying a Yoruba woman. One of the biggest Igbo musicians, Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe who is now late, sang many Igbo biggest hit songs which are still being sold. At the same time, most of his tunes are being remixed by ‘Flavour N’abania’ to become famous. The late Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe married a Yoruba woman. According to Obi Ike, “the vast majority of Igbos, to this very day, don’t know that the wife of the popular Igbo musician, Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe is from Abeokuta, Ogun State. Do you know why? Because Igbos simply do not care, and do you know why Igbo don’t care? Because it doesn’t matter.” To Igbos, it doesn’t matter who you are married to, but in Yoruba’s own case, it is a big deal who you are married to if the person is not from Yoruba tribe.
